The flowers on the reserve are the real gems of the site, but the butterflies are an absolute delight in summer, and, of course, many of these butterflies rely on the flowers for their breeding cycle, and particularly for their caterpillars to feed on.
This is a list of the Butterflies & Moths that I have identified at the Reserve and links to individual pages for each species - usually with photographs.
Butterflies are sometimes difficult to identify unless by an expert (although some are very distinctive) - they always seem to fly away just as I get close enough to see or photograph them!
Orchid Bottom is a particularly good area for butterflies in the summer, but if you keep your eyes open you can see certain specimens anywhere in the reserve at the right time of year.
In 2012 I started to monitor butterflies that I saw on the reserve, and if you click on the link below, you will see the Excel spreadsheet showing the results of my recording activity. Be sure to read the "Comments" page which has some disclaimers and some simple analysis
This list currently shows 38 species
The link below shows a 2-page illustration of the more common butterflies found on the reserve.
