Chalk grassland flowers are what makes the Devenish a really special place. Chalk grassland is a relatively rare habitat, and Wiltshire is globally important (mostly due to Salisbury Plain). The Devenish a small but important piece in the mosaic of Chalk Grasslands in Wiltshire. These flowers are easily crowded out by more vigorous plants, which is why we have sheep to eat the scrub, nettles, brambles etc, and allow these more delicate flowers to thrive.
I have identified and photographed all the flowers listed below (most of which are grassland flowers, but some are found in woodland or other habitats). Click on the name to see a page dedicated to that flower.
